When you think of a leak, you think of gas, right? Well in the world of refrigeration and air conditioning the ‘gas’ is known as ‘refrigerant’.
Refrigerant can be made from over 50 different gases that are odourless and colourless.
So how are you meant to know if your commercial refrigeration system or cooling unit has a leak?
It’s almost impossible to obviously identify that there is a leak within your system. There is no pool of water, there is no moisture build up inside the refrigeration unit and there is no noticeable odour warning you that something is wrong.
When you have a natural gas leak within your business or home, there is a strong, ominous smell to motivate you into fast action … but when you have a refrigerant leak, it could go unnoticed for days, months or in worst cases, years, before becoming disastrous and requiring major repairs.
The main sign that you have a refrigerant leak is temperature. If your system’s temperature is not recovering as per its normal function, then there’s a good chance it’s leaking.
Some more sophisticated cooling systems have warning alarms to tell you that refrigerant is escaping from the unit. In the case of major retailers, they often invest in highly specialised devices to constantly monitor their large freezers and cool rooms for any changes, but for most businesses that utilise commercial refrigeration these types of investments are price prohibitive.
Temperature is the major warning sign that should prompt you to contact Big Bear!
We perform leak testing across the whole system with the best leak detector on the market.
You can read more about the Danfoss Leak Detector here.
Some leaks can be miniscule, as small as just 1 part per million. However, even though that is incredibly small, it is leaking at high pressure, 24 hours a day …
…and you only need to lose a small amount of refrigerant for the system to become critical and impact the temperature of the food or the climate.
This small loss and subsequent temperature increase can cause your entire stock of produce to spoil. And nobody likes the hefty cost of urgent fresh deliveries to keep their business running!
The accuracy of the Danfoss Leak Detector enables us to quickly find the source of the leak and carry out the necessary repairs straight away. Whether the leak has developed in a gasket or a join, or there is a microscopic hole in copper pipe work that has worn thin, we can fix your system and minimise further leakage. Which of course, minimises the possibility of stock loss, business downtime and extra bills.
Undergoing regular maintenance on your commercial refrigeration or air conditioning system is the best way to ensure you don’t have any refrigerant leaks.
During the routine maintenance checks we can determine if there are changes to refrigerant levels in your unit.
When the refrigerant is in the system’s receiver it is in a liquid form, just like water in a tank. The level will always be the same when the system is free from leaks.
If our maintenance team suspect any variation we can fix the problem immediately. This type of maintenance helps to reduce the occurence of critical leaks and the need for costly repairs.
